Six people have died, and six others have been injured after a kombi veered off the road and plunged into a deep, water-filled gully along the Harare-Bulawayo Road, police have confirmed.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the fatal accident occurred on 29 July 2026 at around 10 pm at the 9-kilometre peg, at the Tynwald Rail Road Flyover near the Harare Drive junction.
In a statement issued on 30 July 2026, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said a kombi carrying 11 passengers veered off the road before plunging into a deep concrete-lined gully that contained water.
“Six people were killed while six others were injured when a kombi with 11 passengers on board veered off the road and plunged into a deep concrete-lined gully which contained water,” Comm Nyathi said.
He did not specify whether the driver was among the dead or injured, but the figures indicate that at least 12 people were on board, including the driver, and possibly the conductor.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary for post-mortem examination, while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
Comm Nyathi said efforts to locate and notify the next of kin of all victims were continuing.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes the injured a speedy recovery,” he said.
Police said further details will be released in due course as investigations continue.
