ZERA Hikes Fuel Prices Again

The Government, through the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA), has increased fuel prices again following a modest reduction over the past few weeks.

In a notice issued on Friday night, ZERA announced an upward review of petrol and diesel prices for the next two weeks, effective from 24 July 2026.

Diesel will now sell for US$1.95 per litre, up from US$1.87, while the price of petrol will go up to US$1.96 per litre, from US$1.93.

In early June, diesel cost US$2.09, and petrol was US$2.08, before falling to US$1.99 per litre and US$1.98 respectively.

“The petroleum prices are effective from 24 July 2026 for a period of two weeks. Government interventions continue to cushion consumers from the impact of global geopolitical developments,” ZERA said.

“The public and operators are advised that the blending ratio is at E20. Operators may sell the petroleum products below the prescribed prices depending on their trading advantages and should display prices in a prominent place as provided for by the fuel pricing regulations.”

This follows a recent spike in global fuel prices, with Brent crude breaching the US$100-a-barrel mark after dropping to around US$71 earlier in July. The increase is primarily driven by a dramatic escalation of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and lingering bottlenecks in fuel refining.

Renewed hostilities between Washington and Tehran have led to the United States reimposing a naval blockade on Iran. Ongoing US strikes on targets inside Iran have fuelled fears of prolonged disruptions to this critical maritime oil corridor.

Compounding the tension, Houthi forces in Yemen have threatened to target shipping vessels carrying Saudi oil through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, creating a double choke-point threat for global energy transit.
