Highlanders have announced the signing of winger Benjani Jnr Amon Mwaruwari, the son of head coach and former Zimbabwe international Benjani Mwaruwari.
The 21-year-old joins the Bulawayo giants after playing non-league football in England, where his father enjoyed a successful professional career with Portsmouth, Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers.
“Welcome to Highlanders Football Club. We wish you every success in the famous Black and White,” the club said in a video announcement of the signing on Monday.
Benjani Jnr is understood to have been training with Highlanders for several weeks and is believed to have impressed the coaching staff sufficiently to earn a place in the squad.
His arrival comes at a time when Bosso are facing serious financial challenges, limiting their ability to strengthen the squad through new signings. Club officials have warned of an uncertain future due to the lack of reliable funding.
Financial statements presented by executive member for finance Nkani Khoza at the club’s extraordinary general meeting on Sunday showed liabilities of US$1,043,456 against assets valued at US$618,478.
“Presently, there are no sponsors and the donors make their donations when we are already in arrears.
“From the financial statements, it is clear that technically the club is unable to settle its obligations; hence, its future as a going concern is under serious threat,” Khoza said.
