A bus driver died, and 11 passengers were injured early on Wednesday when a Kalamazoo bus carrying Malawian nationals overturned on the N1 near Beitbridge.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed the crash happened at about 4km south of the Beitbridge Border Post, near Musina.

Department spokesperson Mashudu Mabata said preliminary reports indicate the driver lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue. The bus then overturned.

The bus was travelling from KwaZulu-Natal to the Repatriation Camp in Beitbridge, Mabata said.

She said emergency services responded to the scene. The driver died at the scene. The 11 injured passengers were taken to the Musina Hospital for treatment.

The crash occurred amid nationwide demonstrations on Tuesday, 30 June, in which protestors called for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa.

Organisers of the protests, led by March and March, said their demand remained unchanged: undocumented foreign nationals should leave the country.

The organisers have set 30 June as an unofficial deadline for undocumented foreign nationals to “self-deport”.
