More than 3,600 Zimbabweans have been repatriated from South Africa since the latest wave of xenophobic threats began several weeks ago.
Presidential spokesperson George Charamba said on Monday, 29 June, that 3,624 Zimbabweans were now back home and had been reintegrated into their communities.
“This is as of Friday last week. More will be on the way once processed by South African authorities,” he said.
Charamba added that, after diplomatic talks between Zimbabwe and South Africa, it was agreed that screening and profiling will take place at Beitbridge Border Post to speed up the process and ensure the safety of returnees.
He also said the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) had been told to waive all taxes on household goods brought by returnees.
Buses have been made available to take Zimbabweans home once processing is complete, he said.
Thousands of Zimbabwean nationals have been moved from outside the consulate in Cape Town to the Home Affairs processing centre in Epping.
They are trying to get documents to return home before the 30 June deadline set by the citizen-led civic group and protest movement, March and March, for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa.
