A 22-year-old man from Rujeko C in Masvingo has been convicted of leaving accommodation without payment after failing to settle a US$1,110 bill for a 21-day stay at a lodge.

Simbarashe Majeke appeared before Magistrate Elizabeth Hanzi at the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court. He was found guilty and remanded in custody to 23 June for sentencing.

The court heard that Majeke, who claims to be a freelance software developer, checked into Amazing Villages Lodge on 18 May 2026 for a 21-day booking. By the end of his stay, his bill had risen to US$1,110.

Prosecutor Leyton Katsidzira said on 6 June, Majeke told security staff he was taking his luggage out to have his clothes washed elsewhere, claiming the lodge was no longer doing laundry on time.

Security alerted management, but Majeke later returned without the clothes and remained at the lodge for two more days.

On 8 June, he tried to leave the premises without paying. He was stopped by lodge manager Munashe Chikaka, and reportedly offered to pay in instalments. The offer was rejected.

Police were called as Majeke attempted to leave without settling the bill, and he was arrested at the scene.
