The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of a 50-year-old man for assault and pointing a firearm during an inter-schools rugby match at Eaglesvale College on 13 June 2026.
In a statement on Tuesday, 16 June, the ZRP said Lotshe Yuri Rodgers Mangena, 50, had been arrested over the incident, which happened during a match between Christian Brothers College (CBC) and Eaglesvale College in Harare.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Mangena had been charged with assault and pointing a firearm.
“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Lotshe Yuri Rodgers Mangena (50) for assault and pointing a firearm,” he said.
“The suspect has since appeared before the Harare Magistrate’s Court. Meanwhile, the ZRP has since seized the firearm from the suspect.”
Mangena is the son of Alfred Nikita Mangena, the first commander of the Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA), who was killed on 28 June 1978 when his Land Rover struck a Rhodesian landmine near Kabanga Mission in Zambia.
He stormed the rugby pitch brandishing a gun at the end of the match, during ugly scenes that followed Eaglesvale’s 14-13 victory.
Videos from the incident showed parents running onto the pitch before clashes broke out, leading to the assault allegations.
