A 23-year-old man from Mzilikazi in Bulawayo, who is totally blind and partially deaf, is seeking financial assistance to buy a Starlink kit and start a community Wi-Fi business.
Sambulo Moyo lives with his mother, younger brother and sister. He completed his O-Levels a few years ago, passing Family Religious Studies, Business Enterprise Skills and Ndebele. He said his hearing impairment made it difficult to pass his other subjects.
Despite his challenges, Sambulo has drawn up a plan to earn a living from home.
He intends to run a daily internet hotspot from his house in Mzilikazi using a Starlink Standard kit, operating from 9 am to 6 pm.
He plans to charge R5 per person per hour. Based on four customers an hour, he estimates he would make R20 an hour — about R180 a day, roughly US$9. Over 22 working days, that would be around US$198 a month. He also hopes to open at weekends to cover quieter days.
Sambulo said he chose Starlink because it is wireless and can be installed anywhere. TelOne and Liquid Home fibre, he added, are not available on his street.
He needs at least US$400 to buy the Starlink kit, a second router and a MikroTik device to manage the Wi-Fi network.
Sambulo uses a phone with a screen reader and types with a braille keyboard to access online content.
“As the kit is expensive, I cannot afford it alone. My goal is to be independent and support my family through my own business,” he said.
