Congregants at the Apostolic Faith Mission church in Cape Town’s Kosovo informal settlement have vowed to keep attending services, despite being robbed at gunpoint during worship.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), a gang of armed men stormed the church on Sunday, stripping the congregation of their personal belongings and making off with church equipment.
The entire incident was caught on the church’s livestream and has since circulated widely on social media.
Five suspects were subsequently arrested and appeared in court on Thursday, where their case was postponed to next Thursday.
Yanga Ngayi, the suspect spotted in the viral video, faces a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances. His co-accused, Zukisani Mkatu, Anda Ncalo, Siyamdumisa Ncalo, and Sinethemba Mzo, have been charged with the possession of stolen property.
Despite the traumatic ordeal, churchgoers remain defiant, with one member insisting he will continue to attend services without fear.
“So, I don’t see a reason not to go to church. Even in this situation, it’s clear that God is good because anything could have happened, but no one was harmed.”
Speaking about the wider security situation, the congregant added that criminal activity in the informal settlement has reached a crisis point, forcing locals to live under the constant shadow of violence.
