A 48-year-old domestic worker was allegedly murdered after refusing to hand over oranges to a fellow villager in Zaka.

Tatenda Manatsa, 27, of Runesu Village under Chief Nyakunhuwa, appeared before Zaka magistrate Grace Tupiri on 8 June, charged with murder.

Prosecutor Taurayi Kidman Basopo told the court that the incident occurred at around 4:30 pm on 6 June at the home of Charles Madyauta, who worked as a domestic worker at the Matorofa homestead.

The court heard that Manatsa went to Madyauta’s house and asked for oranges. Madyauta said no and told him to leave.

According to the State, Manatsa lost his temper, started shouting and confronted the older man. The two wrestled before Manatsa overpowered him, pushed him to the ground and sat on top of him.

He is alleged to have punched Madyauta several times in the face.

The State says Manatsa then picked up a log and hit him twice on the head and several times on both hands.

He allegedly went on to take three stones from the fireplace and struck Madyauta repeatedly in the face. Madyauta died at the scene.
