Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo has said a cement plant under construction in Chegutu has created about 450 jobs.
Shuntai Investments is expected to produce nearly 800,000 tonnes of cement annually once it is commissioned in August.
The plant was initially due to be commissioned in May, but delays in the delivery of equipment pushed completion to August due to disruptions linked to the Iran–Israel conflict.
Speaking during a tour of the facility, Chombo said the project is 90% complete and is already transforming lives in the area through job creation and skills transfer.
“Work is progressing well, and the company is employing more local people, with approximately 450 workers currently on site,” said Chombo.
“We have encouraged the company to hire Zimbabwean technicians alongside the Chinese workers”.
Chombo said the facility is expected to increase domestic cement supply by about 800,000 tonnes a year and help ease shortages in the construction sector.
She added that the project is also expected to boost the country’s energy generation capacity by producing 50 megawatts from its own thermal power plant, with any excess power to be fed into the national grid.
