Two men have died and a third remains missing after a Toyota Hilux carrying five Zimbabwean nationals was swept off a flooded low-water bridge in Addo, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
Police confirmed the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, when the vehicle attempted to cross the swollen river.
Three men, aged between 34 and 50, were in the front cab, while two others, aged between 30 and 35, were riding in the load bed.
According to police, the two men in the back managed to jump clear and escape to safety as the rising floodwaters dragged away the vehicle.
Police spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy gave details of the emergency response that followed.
“A search and rescue operation was immediately launched, involving the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit, the Sundays River Valley Local Municipality, and the EMS Rescue Team,” McCarthy said.
“Two of the missing Zimbabwean nationals were recovered from the river and declared dead on the scene by EMS.
“The search for the missing alleged driver (aged 35) of the Toyota Hilux bakkie continues. The investigation is ongoing.”
