The government has approved plans to recruit 8,785 new health workers in a bid to strengthen Zimbabwe’s public health sector and improve services across the country.
Treasury is expected to sign off on the 2026 financial framework this week, clearing the way for the Health Services Commission (HSC) to start recruiting straight away.
Deputy Finance Minister David Mnangagwa announced the move on Thursday at a Human Resources for Health Dialogue Meeting.
“I’m pleased to formally announce that Treasury has approved 8 785 new health worker posts for 2026,” said Mnangagwa.
“To show our commitment to immediate implementation, Treasury concurrence for the 2026 financial framework will be finalised this week.”
Mnangagwa said the Government was balancing health sector demands against a tight budget, but it remained committed to long-term investment in the sector.
He said Treasury had also raised health workers’ pay in April 2026 and was looking at non-monetary incentives to help keep staff. These include better working conditions, staff housing and career development.
“We successfully absorbed 3 500 village health workers onto the national payroll by the end of 2025, while also exploring innovative financing models, including health taxes and sugar-related levies, to sustainably support community health structures,” he said.
