Police have arrested four men following violent scenes that forced the abandonment of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash between Hardrock and Dynamos at Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe on Sunday, 24 May.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed on Monday, 25 May, that Shingirai Chivavare, 34, Matthias Taderera, 43, Tavakuda Nyoni, 46, and Emmanuel Dube, 50, were arrested in connection with acts of violence and public disorder at the match.
Trouble erupted after the 80th minute when supporters from both teams reportedly hurled missiles at each other, invaded the pitch and engaged in fighting. Match officials abandoned the game as chaos spread.
Seven supporters were injured during the disturbances and were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital, where they are in a stable condition. Turnstiles and perimeter barricades were damaged in the skirmishes.
Police said they are also investigating how nearly 5,000 fans were left outside the stadium when the match kicked off. Some later damaged infrastructure and forced their way in, contributing to the violence inside.
“The police urges soccer authorities to ensure stadium seating capacity is not exceeded and tickets are pre-sold before the match to curtail stampede such as the one witnessed before the match at Chihwanda stadium,” ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Nyathi said.
He added that the ZRP will engage the Premier Soccer League and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) to ensure “effective stadium administration and public safety are prioritised before soccer matches start”.
Comm Nyathi warned the public against violence and vandalism at sporting events.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges members of the public to exercise tolerance, discipline and responsible conduct during sporting events. The public is warned against engaging in violence, vandalism or any form of public disorder, as offenders will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” he said.
