Manchester City have announced that manager Josep “Pep” Guardiola will step down from his role this summer.
The Catalan, who joined City in July 2016, has won 20 major trophies during his ten years in charge, establishing himself as the most successful manager in the club’s history.
In a statement issued on Friday, 22 May, the club confirmed that despite his departure as manager, Guardiola will maintain his relationship with the City Football Group (CFG) by taking up a new role as a Global Ambassador. This position will see him provide technical advice to clubs across the group, while working on specific projects and collaborations.
Guardiola’s extraordinary tenure yielded six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, three FA Cups, five League Cups, a FIFA Club World Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, and three FA Community Shields.
His era was defined by breaking records previously thought untouchable in English football:
The Centurions (2017/18): City collected an all-time competition record of 100 Premier League points. That historic campaign also saw records tumble for the most goals scored (106), most wins (32), most away points (50), the biggest goal difference (+79), and the widest winning margin (19 points).
The Domestic Four-Timer (2018/19): Guardiola led his side to Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and Community Shield success, making City the first team in English football history to win all four domestic trophies in a single season.
The Treble & Global Dominance (2022/23): City became only the second English side to secure the Treble of the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup—widely regarded as the greatest campaign in the club’s 132-year history. This was followed by the UEFA Super Cup in Athens and the FIFA Club World Cup in Jeddah, making City the first English club to hold the game’s five biggest prizes simultaneously in a calendar year.
Four in a Row (2023/24): He guided City to a fourth consecutive Premier League title, a feat never before achieved in the history of the English top flight.
In his final act as Manchester City manager, Guardiola has signed off by securing both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup in his ultimate season in charge.
Pep’s revolutionary impact on the game saw him named Premier League Manager of the Season five times, alongside claiming the League Managers Association’s (LMA) Manager of the Year award on three occasions.
His cultural impact was also recognised beyond the pitch; in the summer of 2025, he was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Manchester at a ceremony in the historic Whitworth Hall, celebrating his extraordinary contribution to the city.
