Four people have been arrested after police stopped a bus carrying explosives and hazardous chemicals along the Bulawayo-Plumtree Road.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests on Thursday, 15 May.
The suspects are bus driver Brighton Chimbidzika, 40, conductor Takunda Dzichauya, 24, Meksen Ncube, 70, and Giant Mudimba, 49.
They face charges of illegally transporting explosives and hazardous substances without the required licences or permits.
Commissioner Nyathi said the bus was intercepted at a security roadblock at the 13km peg along Bulawayo-Plumtree Road. Police recovered sodium cyanide, caustic soda, Hydrox 500 chemicals, emulsions and capped fuses.
He warned that carrying explosives and hazardous substances in public service vehicles puts passengers, road users and communities at serious risk.
“Offenders will be arrested and prosecuted without fear or favour,” Nyathi said.
Police have warned bus crews and other transporters not to carry explosives, detonators, cyanide or other hazardous substances without lawful authority and proper safety measures.
Mining companies, suppliers and chemical firms have also been told not to sell explosives, detonators or cyanide to individuals or companies without valid permits and verification documents.
Commissioner Nyathi said companies that illegally sell, store or distribute explosives and hazardous chemicals risk arrest and prosecution.
The ZRP is urging the public to report any suspicious transportation, storage or handling of explosives and hazardous substances at their nearest police station. Reports can also be made to the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or via WhatsApp on 0712 800197.
