A woman from Binga, Matabeleland North, was killed by a crocodile while fishing in the Zambezi River on Friday afternoon.
The attack happened at a popular fishing spot known as Ambush Alley along the river.
A witness said the woman was fishing with a neighbour in shallow water when a crocodile suddenly emerged, attacked her and dragged her into deeper water.
Her companion screamed for help, alerting nearby fishermen who rushed to the scene. They threw stones at the crocodile in an effort to make it release her.
“The crocodile later left the body near some reeds after failing to pull it further into the water,” a source said.
One of the fishermen then retrieved the body from the river before family members and authorities were informed.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda confirmed the incident.
“I can confirm that a woman died after being attacked by a crocodile while fishing in the Zambezi River in Binga,” Insp Banda said.
He urged communities living near water bodies to take extra care, saying crocodile attacks were increasing in the area.
“We continue to urge fishermen and members of the public to remain vigilant when fishing or doing activities near rivers and dams. People should avoid entering waters known to have crocodiles, especially alone,” he said.
The body was taken to Binga District Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
