Two men have each been sentenced to 17 years in prison for the rape of 14-year-old girls in separate cases in Gwanda and Chimanimani.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) confirmed the convictions on Tuesday, 12 May 2026.

In Gwanda, a 32-year-old man was convicted by the Gwanda Regional Magistrates’ Court for raping his niece. The court heard that on 6 February 2026, the Grade 6 pupil was at home when the offender arrived. The girl fled after recognising him, as he had previously harassed her, saying he wanted her to be “the mother of my child”. He chased her, caught her in a nearby field and raped her despite her pleas.

The offender left the scene, and the girl reported the attack to her aunt, who helped her notify the police. He was arrested soon afterwards. The court imposed an effective 17-year prison term.

In a separate case, the Chipinge Regional Magistrates’ Court sentenced Kudzai Mungoza (33), a contract builder from Kwayedza Village under Chief Chikuku in Chimanimani, to an effective 17 years for raping a 14-year-old girl.

On 23 April 2026, Mungoza was working at the victim’s homestead. At around 2 pm, he shook her hand and tightened his grip when she tried to pull away. He then grabbed her by the neck, covered her mouth and dragged her into a room where he raped her.

The assault was interrupted when the girl’s aunt returned from the garden. The family refused Mungoza’s pleas for forgiveness, carried out a citizen’s arrest and took him to the police. Although he pleaded not guilty, he was convicted after trial. He was given a 20-year sentence, with three years suspended on condition of good behaviour.
