A 34-year-old Harare man has taken Delta Beverages to court after he said he found foreign objects in a 300ml bottle of Coca-Cola. During the trial, he described them as worms.
The first accused is vendor Violet Musandukwa. The second is Delta Beverages, represented by Chenai J Chawafambira. Both are charged with contravening the Public Health Act.
Shepherd Mukonomera told the court during cross-examination that he started spitting out worms after drinking the soft drink.
But Delta Beverages’ lawyer argued the objects were maggots, not worms. He said the drink was sent to a government lab, where a visual check concluded the objects were maggots. A separate scientific test later identified them as starch.
Harare magistrate Lisa Mutendereki postponed the case to 18 May for the trial to continue.
The court heard that on 19 October 2023, along Mbuya Nehanda Street in Harare, Mukonomera bought the 300ml Coca-Cola from Musandukwa.
He allegedly drank about a quarter of the bottle before noticing unknown objects inside and spitting out what he had swallowed.
Mukonomera filed a police report, leading to the arrests. The remaining drink was sent to the forensic laboratory for examination, and a test report was produced.
