Chimanimani residents have been left shaken after a newborn baby was found alive in a pit latrine.

On the morning of 26 April, Elizabeth Gwata of Bumba Village, under Chief Mutambara, went to her toilet at about 6 am. While inside, she heard a baby crying from the pit.

She raised the alarm immediately and alerted her 28-year-old son, David Gwata, who informed local leaders and police at Cashel Valley. Community members acted quickly and managed to retrieve the infant alive.

The baby girl was taken to Mutambara Mission Hospital, where she is receiving medical care. On admission, she weighed 2.8kg.

Police have opened an investigation to identify who was responsible. They are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

The incident has caused anger and concern in the community, with residents questioning how a newborn could be treated in such a way.
