The Embassy of Zimbabwe in South Africa has issued an urgent advisory to its nationals amid reports of troubling demonstrations targeting foreign nationals in parts of the country.

In Advisory Note Number 1 of 2026, released on 28 April, the mission said it had received reports through its consulates in Johannesburg and Cape Town of incidents posing a serious risk to the safety and well-being of Zimbabweans residing in South Africa.

The warning comes against a backdrop of sporadic unrest in certain areas, where foreign nationals are reportedly being singled out during demonstrations, heightening fears of possible violence and displacement.

In response, the embassy has urged Zimbabwean citizens to remain vigilant and to steer clear of areas where protests are taking place. Nationals have also been advised, where possible, to stay indoors and limit unnecessary travel until calm is restored.

The mission further called on Zimbabweans to promptly report any incidents or threats to the South African Police Service, as well as to Zimbabwe’s diplomatic offices in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Citizens have also been reminded to keep essential documents, including identification and travel papers, on their person at all times, in case they are required for verification or emergency assistance.

The embassy assured nationals that it remains in close contact with relevant South African authorities and is closely monitoring developments, pledging to provide further updates as the situation evolves.

Zimbabweans requiring assistance have been advised to contact the embassy in Pretoria, located at 798 Merton Avenue in Arcadia, or the consulate in Johannesburg at 20 Ernest Oppenheimer Avenue in Bruma, where a dedicated emergency hotline has been established.

Those in the Western Cape region can seek assistance from the consulate in Cape Town, situated at 53–55 Kuyper Street in Zonnebloem.
