Nurses Begin Three-Day Nationwide Strike

Essential Tools

Nurses at public health institutions across Zimbabwe have embarked on a three-day strike beginning Monday, 20 April, citing low pay and poor working conditions.

The Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) said staff at facilities, including Sally Mugabe Hospital and United Bulawayo Hospitals, are among those taking part in the industrial action.

The nurses say they feel misled after assurances of improved salaries failed to materialise in April, with many reporting that their take-home pay falls short of meeting basic living costs. Some claim that, after deductions, their earnings were significantly lower than expected.

They have indicated that they will not report for duty in hospital wards until the strike concludes on 22 April.

According to the association, repeated attempts to engage with their employer have yielded little progress.

Despite ongoing discussions, nurses say their concerns have not been adequately addressed, leaving them with no option but to escalate their grievances.

Many now say the profession has become increasingly difficult to sustain, with some struggling to afford even basic transport to work.
