A small plane crashed in a mountainous area between Zaka and Bikita districts in Masvingo province on Sunday morning, killing the pilot but sparing his wife, who suffered severe leg injuries.
According to locals, the aircraft, carrying just the pilot and his wife, who are said to be Australians, burst into flames upon impact in Nyoka Village—about 85km southeast of Masvingo.
Videos from the scene showed it smashed among trees and tall grass, broken into pieces, with a large section of the fuselage engulfed in fire.
CAAZ investigators were quickly sent to probe the cause. One witness said the woman seemed to have been thrown clear before the crash, leaving both her legs broken. She was rushed to the hospital, though her condition remains unknown.
Tragically, the pilot was trapped in the burning wreckage and suffered severe burns to his lower body up to chest level. He died before rescuers could free him.
