Musa Nyasha David Manyika, a 41-year-old business development manager at Old Mutual, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of raping a student from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ).
Manyika was found guilty on two counts of rape by Harare regional magistrate Fadzai Mthombeni. He received a 15-year sentence for each count, but the sentences will run concurrently.
The complainant, a UZ student, was on an Old Mutual scholarship.
In the first count, prosecutor Chido Gohori demonstrated that in November 2022, Manyika sent a WhatsApp message asking the complainant to help him pack some banners at Old Mutual Gardens. He then picked her up from the University of Zimbabwe campus and drove her to Old Mutual Gardens.
Upon arrival, Manyika took the woman to his office, where he raped her. Afterwards, he apologised and gave her a branded T-shirt, a juice bottle, and a cap. He also threatened her, saying that if she disclosed the incident, he would withdraw her scholarship.
On June 19, 2024, Manyika called the student after work, asking to discuss her career. The complainant met him at Ashbrittle Shops.
After their conversation, he offered to drive her home. However, instead of stopping at her gate, he drove onto Belfast Road, turned immediately right, and then stopped.
Manyika adjusted the passenger seat where the complainant was sitting, removed her trousers, and raped her once again. He then drove her home and asked for her forgiveness.
