Four of the seventeen South Africans who were reportedly forced to fight for Russia in its war against Ukraine have returned home. They are said to have been lured to Russia with promises of high-paying jobs.

The group arrived at OR Tambo International Airport this week after previously sending a distress signal to the South African government, saying they were trapped in the conflict zone.

They are among 17 South Africans believed to have travelled to Russia under the pretext of employment opportunities.

Thirteen others are still thought to be in the region, with the government confirming that it is continuing efforts to facilitate their return.

The four returnees were taken into police custody on arrival. Under South African law, citizens are prohibited from participating in foreign armed conflicts without official authorisation.

Authorities are expected to investigate the recruitment networks, facilitators, and organisers behind the scheme.
