The body of a 31-year-old man from Hwange District, who was swept away while trying to drive through the flooded Deka River, has been found nearly two weeks later, about 20 kilometres downstream.

Washington Ncube, from Kasase Village in Ward 9, was discovered last Friday in Mwemba Village, Kakunka area, under Chief Hwange. He went missing on the night of 14 January at around 8 pm.

Ncube had been driving back to Hwange town after dropping off a passenger in Mashala Village when he tried to cross the swollen river, which had burst its banks after heavy rain.

Ward 10 councillor Lethukuthula Ngwenya said a villager found the body while running errands in nearby bushes.

The villager’s dogs had started barking and ran towards the riverbank, leading him to the body, which was lying face down.

The body had not been mutilated but was showing signs of decomposition. Added Ngwenya:

“The body was taken to Victoria Falls Hospital for post-mortem and was later buried on Saturday evening at his rural home.”

Ngwenya revealed that the deceased’s twin brother and uncle also died in separate drowning incidents several years ago.
