Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Mthuli Ncube has said the drop in inflation to single-digit levels is an important step towards long-term economic stability.

He said this stability is essential for sustainable economic growth and for achieving Vision 2030, which aims to make Zimbabwe a prosperous upper-middle-income society.

On Monday, 26 January 2026, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) announced that inflation in the ZiG currency had fallen to 4.1 per cent in January 2026, compared to the same period last year.

Inflation measured in US dollars also declined to 1 per cent during the same month. Said Ncube:

“This marks a historic milestone for Zimbabwe after nearly three decades since the country recorded single-digit inflation in domestic currency.

“This is a result of concerted and consistent efforts by the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe through the implementation of complementary fiscal and monetary policies.

“Implementation of prudent fiscal policy over the past few years, and complementary monetary policy, since the introduction of ZiG in April 2024, has resulted in macroeconomic stability.”

Ncube said both reserve money and broad money are fully backed by foreign currency reserves, with the Government increasing the foreign asset reserves supporting the ZiG from about US$276 million in April 2024 to US$1.2 billion by the end of December 2025.

He added that prices of most basic consumer goods, including bread, mealie meal, detergents, beef, tea, milk, lotions and other essentials, have remained largely unchanged over the past 12 months, between January and December 2025.

Ncube said the Government’s goal is to maintain single-digit inflation this year and beyond, as part of its macro-economic stabilisation framework, through the continued implementation of well-co-ordinated monetary and fiscal policies.

He also urged businesses to show restraint in setting prices, while encouraging workers to align wage demands with inflation trends.
