Police in Macheke, Mashonaland East, have arrested a 34‑year‑old man from Anzona Farm who is suspected of raping three women over the course of three days.
It is alleged that the man assaulted his victims with a switch before raping them.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest to The Herald, though he declined to name the suspect.
The first incident took place on 13 January at around midday. The suspect allegedly confronted two women walking along a footpath from Nhohwe Primary School, accusing them of invading his privacy while he was urinating by the roadside.
He then beat both women with a switch and raped one of them in front of her companion. After the assault, he ordered the women to go home. The victim later informed her sister, who reported the matter to ZRP Macheke.
On the following morning, 14 January, at about 7:30 am, the suspect is said to have attacked another woman on her way to the Waterloo shopping centre.
He reportedly stood in the middle of the footpath pretending to urinate. When the woman tried to run away, he stopped her, accused her of seeing him naked, beat her with a switch, stripped her clothes, and raped her.
The third attack occurred on 15 January at around 9 am. The suspect allegedly confronted a woman walking towards the Waterloo shopping centre with a child strapped to her back.
The suspect ordered her to remove the child, and when she refused, he beat her with a switch, causing the child to fall. He then raped the woman.
Police attended the scenes and arrested the suspect. All three victims were referred to Nhowe Mission Hospital for medical examinations.
