Controversial Masvingo traditional leader Chief Murinye (Ephias Munodawafa) caused a stir on Saturday, 11 January 2026, after he allegedly used his truck to block the road to Riverton Academy Extension, a new boarding school built by Philimon Mutangiri.

Murinye reportedly told parents to take their children home, saying the school would not open as scheduled because Mutangiri had not obtained his permission to build it.

Mutangiri dismissed the claims, telling Masvingo Mirror that he had actually connected electricity to the chief’s homestead and bought a transformer worth US$7,000.

He added that Chief Murinye is demanding a contract guaranteeing that all his children can attend the school for free. It is understood that the chief has more than one wife.

In a viral video, Chief Murinye is heard threatening parents and guardians who had left their children at the school, saying that local village heads would even throw snakes onto the premises to prevent any learning from taking place.
