Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume’s vintage ceremonial car broke down on the way to the City of Harare’s Christmas lights switch-on on Tuesday evening.
The Rolls-Royce, driven by Mafume’s driver Blessing Rutumhu, had set off from Town House in the CBD at 4.30 PM, leading a procession. But the carefully planned journey didn’t go to plan.
The car developed mechanical problems and had to stop, bringing the procession to a halt. Bystanders gathered as city officials and staff tried to get the vehicle moving again.
Pictures and videos quickly went viral on social media, showing staff pouring water over the engine in a last-ditch attempt to cool it down.
Despite their efforts, the vintage car couldn’t be revived. Mafume left it behind and walked to Africa Unity Square, where the Christmas lights were switched on as planned, officially kicking off the festive season in the Sunshine City.
