Zimbabwe’s arts industry is mourning the death of veteran Sungura musician Nicholas “Senior Lecturer” Zakaria, whose passing was announced on his official Facebook page on Thursday. The revered guitarist and bandleader, known for shaping the direction of Sungura over several decades, is remembered as one of the genre’s most influential voices.
In a statement, his family confirmed the heartbreaking news, describing him as a dedicated artist whose passion for music left a lasting imprint on the nation.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nicholas Zakaria… His legacy will live on through his music, and he will be deeply missed by fans and loved ones. Details regarding a memorial service will be shared in due course. Rest in peace, Senior Lecturer,” the family said.
Zakaria’s footprint in Zimbabwean music stretches back to the 1990s when he led the iconic Khiama Boys, a group that became a breeding ground for talent. It was during this period that he worked closely with now-legendary artists Alick Macheso and the late System Tazvida, mentoring them before they launched successful solo careers. His ability to nurture musicians earned him the nickname Senior Lecturer, a title fans embraced.
Beyond his musical skill, Zakaria’s humility and consistency made him a respected figure across generations. He remained committed to preserving Sungura’s identity while adapting to changing times, cementing his place as a cultural pillar.
Tributes from fans, fellow musicians and industry leaders continue to flood social media, with many crediting Zakaria for shaping not only their careers but the direction of Zimbabwean music as a whole.
