A woman’s search for spiritual help turned into a nightmare when a self-styled traditional healer who claimed he could chase away goblins attempted to rape her during a bogus cleansing ritual.

Cain Mushayi (29) has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after the Rusape Magistrates’ Court found him guilty of attempted rape.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident occurred on 3 October 2025 in Domborembizi Village under Chief Makoni.

Mushayi approached the woman at her homestead, claiming he had the power to repair her marriage and remove goblins that were allegedly “sleeping with her” and destabilising her home.

Desperate for help, she allowed him into her two-roomed house, which was still under construction. Once inside, the bizarre ritual began.

The NPA said Mushayi instructed the woman to remove her trousers before lighting a fire on a stick.

He then placed the burning stick between her legs, insisting the flames would drive away the goblins tormenting her.

The ritual quickly turned violent when Mushayi pushed her to the floor, undressed himself, and attempted to rape her.

A fierce struggle ensued as the woman fought back. During the scuffle, Mushayi ejaculated on her legs before she managed to overpower him, forcing him to flee the house.
