The City of Bulawayo has hired eight additional refuse compactors from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works to help improve garbage collection across the city.
Acting Town Clerk Tennyson Mpunzi said on Tuesday, 11 November, that the move is part of efforts to strengthen waste management operations, especially in suburbs that have experienced irregular refuse collection in recent weeks. He added:
“The immediate focus will be to restore regular refuse collection in the Central Business District (CBD) and Wards 1 to 5, where waste accumulation had become a concern.
“The Community Refuse Removal Programme will continue in Wards 6 to 29, where it has proven to be effective.
“The acquisition of the new refuse compactors will see improvements in the collection of waste from shopping centres across the City.”
Mpunzi said the additional compactors will help the City increase collection frequency, clear existing backlogs, and maintain a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
He also urged residents to cooperate with waste collection teams by placing their refuse out on designated days and refraining from illegal dumping.
