A senior assistant officer of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) appeared in Harare Magistrates Court on Saturday, facing charges of illegal possession of cocaine.

Francis Gerald Mugoni, 34, was remanded in custody by Magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai. He allegedly had 24.95 grams of cocaine, with a street value of around US$1,320.

According to prosecutors, on 29 October at 3 PM, CID Drugs and Narcotics received information that Mugoni was dealing in cocaine at or near Kensington Shopping Centre in Harare.

The following day, at around 10 PM, detectives carried out surveillance near the accused’s usual haunts in the same area.

Detectives reportedly saw Mugoni disembark from a black Nissan X-Trail at the intersection of Connaught and Argyle Roads in Avondale.

When approached and asked to submit to a search, he allegedly ran west along Argyle Road, with detectives giving chase.

He was eventually caught along Kent Avenue, Avondale. A search revealed a transparent plastic sachet containing a white powder suspected to be cocaine.

Mugoni was taken to ZRP Harare Central, where a field test confirmed the substance was indeed cocaine.
