The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it has taken disciplinary action against three officers who were caught on camera harassing a motorist in Budiriro, Harare.
A video of the incident, which has gone viral on social media, shows the officers dragging and kicking a motorist while one of them, a female officer, repeatedly slaps him despite his apparent lack of resistance.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 29 October, the ZRP said it does not condone such behaviour and confirmed that immediate action has been taken against the officers involved.
The police also urged motorists to remain law-abiding and to refrain from using obscene or abusive language towards officers, particularly female officers, during arrests.
However, the ZRP did not disclose the identities of the officers or specify the nature of the disciplinary measures taken. The statement reads:
“The ZRP has taken note of the Budiriro traffic enforcement viral social media incident. The Police command does not condone such conduct by police officers and has since taken appropriate action on the three police officers with immediate effect.
“Meanwhile, the Police urges motorists to be law-abiding citizens and avoid using obscene or vulgar words to police officers, especially women on effecting arrests.”
