The Meteorological Services Department has warned of a delayed and erratic start to the rainy season, with extended dry spells expected through October and November.

MSD Director Rebecca Manzou said normal to above-average temperatures are forecast for the first two months of the 2025/26 season, a trend likely to heighten the risk of lightning strikes, strong winds and hailstorms. She said:

“A delayed and erratic start is anticipated in our rainfall with initial dry spells in October and November.”

Manzou linked the forecast to a negative Indian Ocean dipole and a neutral ENSO climate pattern.

She warned that water scarcity could increase the risk of water-borne diseases and urged communities to remain vigilant.

The outlook is expected to improve as the season progresses, with national rainfall conditions likely to strengthen from December onwards.

Southern and western regions, including Matabeleland South, Matabeleland North, Midlands, Bulawayo and Masvingo, are forecast to receive above-normal to normal rainfall.

In contrast, the northern provinces of Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West and Harare Metropolitan may face normal to below-normal rainfall, with a risk of drying later in the season.
