Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has lauded Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera for conceding defeat in this month’s presidential election, describing the gesture as “exemplary” and a sign that Africa is “coming of age.”
On Wednesday, 24 September, Chakwera conceded defeat in last week’s presidential election, acknowledging that his rival, former president Peter Mutharika, had secured what he described as “an insurmountable lead.”
In a televised address to the nation, Chakwera said he had called Mutharika to congratulate him over his victory. Posting on X, Chamisa said:
“Leaders come and go. Indeed, leaders serve and leave. H.E. President Chakwera of Malawi joins the proud league of incumbents who respect citizens’ choices.”
He commended Chakwera for conceding even before the official declaration of results, calling it “exceptionally and exceedingly exemplary.”
According to Chamisa, Malawi now joins a growing list of African nations with successful, peaceful transitions of power, including Botswana, Zambia, South Africa, Ghana, and Mauritius. He added:
“It is refreshing to have incumbents who hand over power peacefully, without drama, bullets, blood, repression, or rigging.”
