Hundreds of Johanne Masowe yeChishanu congregants held a cleansing prayer along Seke Road on Sunday, following a tragic accident that claimed 17 lives on the busy link between Harare and Chitungwiza on July 22, 2025..

The crash occurred when a 30-tonne haulage truck struck two pedestrians before colliding head-on with a commuter omnibus, killing 17 people.

The route has seen a string of serious accidents this year, raising concern over road safety.

To accommodate the cleansing ceremony on Sunday, the City of Harare temporarily closed sections of Seke Road.

Speaking during the event, Vapostori and vaZion for ED leader Madzibaba Moses Gwasarira urged all motorists and pedestrians to adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations to prevent further tragedies. He said:

“We prayed here in Chitungwiza for three days and today, Sunday, it was our last day to conduct these prayers, as you know that, “Nyika inonamatirwa nevene vayo.”

“Today we decided to gather here along Seke Road following an increase in fatal road traffic accidents and not only here, but in some parts of the country.

“We have seen that most motorists are negligent on the roads, while others drink and drive.

“I would like to urge all road users that yes, we have conducted cleansing prayers, but they should obey traffic rules and regulations to avoid road accidents.

“They should also desist from drinking and driving, and avoid speeding at all costs.”

He also urged the courts to impose deterrent sentences on reckless drivers.

Vapostori 4ED provincial chairperson and leader of the Velvet Shrine, Madzibaba Owen Chingondi, said the prayers were held to reduce road traffic accidents. He said:

“We are here to conduct this cleansing to ensure that fatal road accidents along this stretch are reduced.

“It is worrying to note that several people have been killed while others were injured as a result of fatal road traffic accidents.”

Chief Seke recently announced plans to conduct traditional cleansing rituals along Seke Road.

The initiative forms part of a wider community effort that includes interdenominational prayers, spirit mediums, and local elders to address recurring tragedies on the highway.

The Masvikiro Enyika4ED group highlighted the importance of appeasing the spirits of those who lost their lives in past accidents on Seke Road.
