Chitungwiza Embarks On Sewer Trunk Repairs

Essential Tools

The Chitungwiza Municipality has partnered with the government to repair the town’s sewer reticulation system after years of blockages and overflows in the sprawling settlement.

Working with development partners, the municipality and the government are carrying out repairs and replacing damaged pipes under the Zengeza Sewer Trunk Rehabilitation Project.

Engineer Mapuranga of Infradevcor, the company implementing the project, said some properties encroaching on pipeline servitudes may be affected. He said:

“The works involve laying 600mm and 800mm Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) pipes to improve sewer infrastructure in the area.

“Some properties encroaching on pipeline servitudes may be affected. In such cases, parts of walls or barriers obstructing access to the sewer line will be temporarily removed.”

Harare Metropolitan Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Charles Tawengwa, said:

“Works that are underway in Zengeza 4 Pagomba area and along the Zengeza Main Sewer line are part of efforts to improve sanitation infrastructure in the area.

“This is part of our commitment to addressing sewer challenges across all affected areas of Chitungwiza, not just Zengeza.”

According to the local authority, the existing pipes, which were installed in 1976, are now being replaced with new ones that will serve a population of more than 40,000.
