A 70-year-old man from Hurungwe has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of three counts of rape against his 16-year-old step-granddaughter, a Form 2 student at a local school.

The judgment was handed down by the Karoi Regional Magistrates’ Court, following a harrowing account of repeated sexual abuse during February 2025.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the pensioner committed the offences on three separate occasions in the same month.

In each instance, he entered the girl’s bedroom, threatened to kill her, and forcibly removed her clothes before raping her.

Despite the victim’s repeated refusal and fear, the abuse continued under threats of violence. The NPA said:

“The offender entered her bedroom, threatened to kill her if she told anyone, and forcibly removed her clothes.

“On a different date during the same month, the offender committed another act of sexual intercourse with the victim under similar circumstances.

“The victim again refused his advances but was threatened, and the act was carried out without her consent.

“A third and final incident of sexual intercourse occurred in February 2025, with the offender again threatening to kill the victim if she told anyone.”

The offender was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for the first two counts of rape, and for the third count, he received an additional 15-year sentence, resulting in a cumulative total of 30 years.

However, the court ordered that 10 years of the sentence be suspended for five years, on condition that the offender does not commit a similar offence during that period. This means the accused will serve an effective 20 years in prison.
