Police in Bulawayo have launched a manhunt for three armed robbers who shot at a motorist before fleeing with a black bag containing US$4,000 and R60,000.

The 33-year-old victim, from Pelandaba West, had parked his white Nissan Note around 6:45 pm on Sunday, 10 August, outside a food outlet at the corner of Fife Street and 12th Avenue when the incident occurred.

The motorist had just placed his order at the restaurant and was waiting by his car when the incident occurred.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the armed robbery. She said:

“Whilst in his motor vehicle, three unknown male adults armed with a pistol approached him and one accused person tried to forcefully open the driver side door… He failed since the doors were locked from inside.”

Inspector Msebele said the the attacker then “used an unknown object to smash the door window and fired four shots at the complainant with a pistol, injuring him on the palm of his right hand.”

The victim fled from the vehicle, leaving behind a black bag filled with cash, which the robbers seized before walking away.

The injured man reported the incident at Bulawayo Central Police Station and was subsequently referred to hospital.

Inspector Msebele urged the public to avoid carrying large sums of money, warning that doing so increases the risk of being targeted by criminals.

She appealed to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to come forward and report to the nearest police station.
