Wigan Athletic have confirmed the loan signing of Liverpool defender Isaac Mabaya for the 2025/26 season.
The 20-year-old full-back, who has Zimbabwean heritage, joins the club in search of his first sustained spell of senior football.
The move is subject to the usual approvals from the Premier League, EFL, and FA.
Mabaya becomes the seventh summer signing for Latics boss Ryan Lowe. Known for his versatility on the right side of the pitch, Mabaya will be looking to gain regular first-team experience at the Brick Community Stadium.
A product of Liverpool’s academy, Mabaya joined the Reds at the age of six and rose through the youth ranks with distinction.
Initially playing as a midfielder, he transitioned to full-back and made a strong impression at youth level.
He featured in senior friendlies during Liverpool’s 2022 pre-season tour in Asia under then-manager Jürgen Klopp.
Despite a serious ankle injury that sidelined him for much of the 2022/23 season, Mabaya returned strongly and signed a new contract with Liverpool in 2023.
Earlier in 2025, he made his competitive debut for the senior side under Arne Slot in an FA Cup match against Plymouth Argyle, and was also named among the substitutes for a Champions League fixture against PSV Eindhoven.
Speaking to Wigan’s official media, Mabaya said he believes the club provides the right environment to further his development. He said:
I am delighted to be here, and can’t wait to get started. Speaking to the Head Coach about what he expects from me, I believe I can bring value to the team.
I’ve had a few conversations with the Gaffer, and I really like his philosophies and way of playing.
I think it will be a great place to develop my career. I know how big the Club is, and can’t wait to play in front of the fans.
Meanwhile, Trey Nyoni, another Liverpool prospect of Zimbabwean descent, remains with the club and recently scored in their 3–1 victory over Yokohama F. Marinos during the Reds’ pre-season tour of Asia.
