Two Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) rangers sustained serious injuries following an elephant attack on Tuesday afternoon in the Sengwa Chirisa Safari Area, located in the Midlands Province.
ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo on Tuesday, 29 July, said that the rangers were on duty responding to a report of a snared buffalo, believed to pose a threat to nearby communities.
While en route to investigate, they encountered a herd of elephants with calves, which suddenly charged at them.
During the encounter, one ranger suffered a broken arm while attempting to flee, while the other was gored by one of the elephants, sustaining severe abdominal injuries as well as fractures to his arm and leg.
Farawo said a helicopter was dispatched to airlift both rangers to Harare for emergency medical treatment. He said:
Our thoughts are with them and their families during this time.
