The Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe has reportedly issued an urgent safety alert after a Chinese national was shot dead during an armed robbery at a Chinese-run mining operation in the Midlands Province.
According to The Global Times, a Chinese English-language newspaper, the incident has raised serious security concerns among the Chinese community in Zimbabwe and triggered swift diplomatic and security responses.
In an official statement released on Sunday, the newspaper reported that the embassy confirmed the fatal shooting, saying a Chinese-operated mining site in the Midlands was targeted in a robbery. A Chinese national was shot and later died despite efforts to save his life.
In response, the Chinese Embassy dispatched a medical team to the area and called on Zimbabwean authorities to step up their investigation, swiftly arrest the suspects, and introduce stronger measures to protect Chinese businesses, institutions, and citizens operating in the country.
The embassy underscored the gravity of the incident and urged all Chinese nationals and businesses in Zimbabwe to remain vigilant and to bolster their security arrangements. The statement reads:
Chinese-funded enterprises and citizens in Zimbabwe [must] stay informed of the local security environment, strengthen onsite protection, and develop clear emergency response plans.
The embassy also advised Chinese nationals to consider hiring professional security personnel for both their workplaces and homes, where feasible.
As part of its broader safety guidelines, it urged heightened vigilance, encouraging individuals to stay alert to any suspicious behaviour, steer clear of crowded or high-risk areas, and keep money and valuables concealed when travelling.
It further warned against travelling alone or during night-time hours.
