Two people died in a road traffic accident on Friday near Kaguvi Training Centre, just outside Gweru, along the Harare–Gweru highway.
The crash involved a Govasberg bus carrying congregants from the Happiness National Apostolic Faith Mission Holy Ghost, who were travelling to Gokwe Centre for a church gathering, and a small lorry heading towards Gweru. An eyewitness, Enock Mupanzarimwa, said:
I was travelling in front of the bus when the accident happened. The driver of the bus was behind the Honda Fit, which suddenly applied the brakes upon seeing the stationary truck.
He then tried to swerve to the extreme right to avoid the oncoming lorry, but the driver of the small lorry appeared to have panicked and pulled off the road, resulting in the head-on collision.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the accident in a statement issued on Saturday afternoon. The statement reads:
The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 248.5 kilometre peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road on 25/07/25 at around 1400 hours .
Two people were killed while four others were injured when a Govasberg bus with 65 passengers on board was involved in a head on collision with a Hino Dutro truck with two occupants on board.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary for post mortem while the injured were admitted at Kwekwe General Hospital.
The Gweru accident comes as the nation continues to grapple with the tragic Chitungwiza crash that claimed 17 lives on Tuesday.
In that incident, a South African-registered truck veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a commuter omnibus along Seke Road near Hunyani Bridge, resulting in one of the country’s deadliest recent road tragedies.
