Seventeen people were killed in a horrific road traffic accident early Tuesday morning at Hunyani Bridge along Seke Road, involving a haulage truck and a commuter omnibus (kombi).
According to a statement issued by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the crash occurred when a haulage truck travelling towards Harare lost control, veered into the oncoming lane, and struck two pedestrians walking along the central reservation (roadway median). Both pedestrians died on the spot.
Moments later, the same truck collided head-on with a Nissan Caravan kombi heading in the opposite direction towards Chitungwiza, carrying 17 passengers.
The impact dragged the kombi off the road, and the truck overturned, landing on top of the vehicle. Fifteen people inside the kombi, including the driver, died at the scene.
Four others were seriously injured, three passengers from the kombi and one occupant from the truck, and were rushed to Chitungwiza Hospital for treatment.
The deceased comprised 10 females and 7 males. All the bodies were taken to Chitungwiza Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
