The government has authorised schools to hold August vacation classes for examination classes, saying that different challenges may have affected syllabus coverage.
In a statement, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Moses Mhike, said the holiday lessons will run for ten working days only, from 18 to 29 August.
He said schools across the country face differing circumstances which may have affected the pace of syllabus completion, hence the need to allow vacation lessons for those preparing to sit national examinations.
As such, for 2025, schools have been given permission to run extra lessons during the August break for Grade 7, Form Four, and Upper Sixth learners.
The Ministry also stressed the need to ensure affordability and inclusivity, and warned against escalating the cost of education, particularly for disadvantaged pupils who may be excluded due to financial difficulties.
Under the approved framework, primary schools are permitted to charge US$2.00 per subject for Grade 7 pupils, or the equivalent in Zimbabwe Gold currency (ZiG) at the prevailing bank rate.
For secondary schools, Form Four pupils will be charged US$3.00 per subject, while Upper Sixth pupils will pay US$5.00 per subject.
Boarding learners will incur an additional fee of US$5.00 per day to cover accommodation and upkeep during the vacation period.
Mhike also instructed that receipts must be issued to parents for all payments, and that accurate financial records be maintained for audit purposes.
The Ministry further directed that all vacation schools must be properly supervised and monitored by District Literacy Coordinators and Remedial Tutors to ensure accountability and quality teaching.
