Metrod Tshuma, a 29-year-old man from the Woodlands Resettlement Area near Victoria Falls survived a lion attack over the weekend.

The incident occurred around 10 AM on Saturday, when Tshuma heard shouts, barking dogs, and a lion’s roar originating from the community’s cattle grazing area. He said:

I heard people shouting and dogs barking. I ran out and heard a lion roaring where our cattle graze, so I ran to meet my colleagues to try and scare it away.

He and several others reportedly approached the area, at which point the lion ambushed him from behind. He said:

It went into a thicket close to where I was, with my colleagues behind me. The lion came from my back and attacked me.

The lion caused severe injuries to Tshuma, including the loss of his thumb and lacerations to his head and hand.

Tshuma said he escaped by pushing the animal away. Injured and bleeding, he made his way towards a tree and called for assistance.

Tshuma was subsequently transported to Victoria Falls Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for his wounds.

Villagers allege that the same lion had killed a neighbor’s cow the day prior to the attack on Tshuma, and proceeded to maul two donkeys after the incident.
