The Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (COTTCO) has reassured farmers that they will be paid what they are owed from the 2023 and 2024 marketing seasons.
COTTCO still owes around US$5.6 million from 2023, and a further ZiG436,580.55 for 2024.
Chief Operating Officer Munyaradzi Chikasha said the company understands the farmers’ frustrations and is working to clear the outstanding payments. He said:
We are aware that there are still some farmers who are yet to get their money from the 2023 and 2024 seasons. We are making all efforts to ensure all farmers receive their money.
Chikasha said the company will need around US$17 million to buy cotton from farmers in the upcoming 2025 marketing season, which kicks off on 1 June. He said:
We are ready for the marketing season and we are going to deploy staff to more than 260 buying points. We are currently recruiting clerks from the cotton growing areas.
Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union representative and farmer Clever Gondo has urged COTTCO to clear its outstanding payments before buying this year’s crop, saying it would help stop farmers from selling their cotton elsewhere.
