MSD Forecasts Windy, Cloudy Weather Conditions: 21 - 23 February 2023

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) of Zimbabwe has said members of the public have to expect windy, cloudy and cool weather conditions starting tomorrow. In a weather update seen by Pindula News, MSD also said it will issue a special official update on Tropical Cyclone Freddy which made landfall in Mauritius on Monday.

ZIMBABWE EVENING WEATHER REPORT AND FORECAST ISSUED AT 1600 HRS TUESDAY 21 FEBRUARY 2023 VALID UNTIL THURSDAY 23 FEBRUARY 2023.

PREAMBLE

There were isolated light showers across the country, with the only rainfall amount above 1 Omm being measured at Beitbridge (13mm). Meanwhile, relatively cool winds from the southeastern parts of Southern Africa are beginning to strengthen and slowly amass this moisture northward. NB: Tropical Cyclone Freddy made landfall over the east coast of Madagascar this evening and weakened into a Tropical Storm. Tropical Storm Freddy is still very far from Zimbabwe (more than 1500km away from the eastern border); a special official update will follow shortly.

FORECAST FOR TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY 22 FEBRUARY 2023

Expect windy, cloudy and cool morning conditions in provinces such as Masvingo, Bulawayo Metropolitan, and Matabeleland South as well as the southern part of Midlands and Manicaland with patchy drizzle in places. Mild by afternoon and cool towards evening. In Matabeleland North, northern parts of Manicaland, and northern parts of Midlands, Harare Metropolitan and all Mashonaland provinces it should be sunny and mild at first becoming warm and cloudy by afternoon, with isolated thundershowers.

IMPACTS

• Windy conditions may blow off roofs and loose debris.

• Flooded rivers remain a potential hazard; even if it has not rained heavily in the area, heavy rains may have occurred upstream

• Even when skies seem clear overhead, lightning remains a threat, as thunderstorm clouds may seem distant.

ACTIONS TO TAKE

• Ensure rooftops are checked and maintained to reduce the likelihood of being blown off by strong winds

• Avoid crossing rivers or streams on foot or in a vehicle; just 30cm depth of flowing water can sweep away large vehicles. Wait for the water to subside.

• When lightning is visible or thunder audible, even from a distance, go indoors and avoid contact with water or metal objects.

• Umbrellas are not safe during storms, raincoats are better, however, staying indoors is the best of all.

WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR THURSDAY 23 FEBRUARY 2023

Expect mostly sunny and hot conditions in Bulawayo Metropolitan, the southern part of Midlands, Masvingo, Matabeleland South and Southern areas of Manicaland Provinces; becoming windy towards evening with a chance of showers over provinces such as Chipinge, Chiredzi and Mwenezi.

Briefly cloudy and warm conditions are expected over all of Mashonaland provinces, Matabeleland North, northern parts of Manicaland, and northern parts of Midlands and Harare Metropolitan Provinces with isolated showers that may be thundery in places.
